Butch Lacy
To the world outside of Denmark Butch Lacy is one of the well-kept secrets of jazz. He was born in Richmond, Virginia, 1947, passed away in Denmark, 2018. He was accompanist to Sarah Vaughan in the early ‘80s, and has been living in Denmark since the mid ‘80s.
Butch Lacy played and recorded with, among others, Lee Konitz, Red Rodney, Bob Rockwell, Chet Baker, Joe Henderson, Clark Terry, Art Pepper, Putte Wickman, Gary Bartz and Bobby Shew.
He was a vibrant and dynamic person who has made a deep imprint on the Danish music community, not least as an instructor at several conservatories and as a composer.

Started piano at age 6 and trumpet at age 10.
Formed a jazz quartet at age 12 which performed on radio broadcasts in Richmond.
Started French horn at age 13 and won several awards while in high school at Varina High in Richmond and later at W.T. Woodson High in Fairfax.
Twice chosen to All State Bands, once as first chair horn.
Meanwhile, jazz on the piano became more intriguing. Moving to the Washington D.C. area, as a senior in high school, was filled with deep inspirations at such night spots as the “Bohemian Caverns”.
Concerts, up close, with “The Three Sounds”, “Ramsey Lewis Trio”, “Les McCann Trio”, “The Horace Silver Quintet”, “The Tee Carson Trio”, “The Bobby Timmons Trio” and “Cannonball Adderly’s Quintet”, were breathtakingly moving experiences for an 18 year old boy.
This was in 1964. ( Was in the audience when Ramsey Lewis recorded “The In Crowd” ).
1963, May Invited by Duke Ellington to share his lunch and hear his concert at Randolph Macon College, and received a fantastic lesson from Cat Anderson.
1965 – 1967 Ithaca College, Ithaca N.Y. French Horn Major.
1967 – 1969 N.C. State University, Raleigh. N.C. Civil Engineering major.
At the same time was the “house” pianist at “The Frog and Nightgown”, in Raleigh. Accompanied such fabulous musicians as Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw,
Pepper Adams, Booker Ervin, Clark Terry, Carol Sloane, Lee Konitz, Maxine Sullivan and Charlie Mariano.
Sometimes a pianist wasn’t needed, then I experienced performances of Bill Evans Trio, Thelonius Monk’s Quartet and Stan Getz’s Quartet! Wow

1974 – 1978 Tuesday Productions, San Diego. Composed jingles for radio and T.V. Awarded 5 “International Broadcasting Awards” from the Hollywood
Society of Radio and Television Broadcasters.
1976 –1982 Freelance composer: 15 soundtracks to documentary films produced by KPBS, San Diego, for the Public Broadcasting System.
Awarded several prizes, including an Emmy Award for the music to “The Whales that Wouldn’t Die”. 1980, San Diego Area
Also: I.D. music to radio and television stations.
Composed “Rocket Ball” for the Houston Rockets, NBA. 1982.
1973 – 1982 Pianist in San Diego. Accompanied great musicians including Art Pepper, Sonny Stitt, Blue Mitchel, Harold Land, Frank Rosalino, Herb Ellis, Red
Norvo, Don Menza and Buddy de Franco. Also played with many of the great musicians in San Diego including Ella Ruth Pigee, Hollis Gentry,
Nathan East, Bob Magnussen, Jim Plank, Gunnar Biggs, Steve O’Connor, Jeff Rew, Joe Morello and Charles McPhearson.
Studied with 2 master teachers Calvin Jackson and Luba Popova.
1976 – 1980 “The Butch Lacy String Consort”. A string quartet combined with a jazz quartet playing compositions by Butch Lacy and guitarist, Peter Sprague.
NRP (National Public Radio) applauded the consort’s music.
1975 – 1981 San Diego State University taught theory, improvisation, combos and directed the big band.
1978 – 1980 “The Arts for Health Foundation”, a non-profit organization, founded by Butch, with the close assistance of clinical psychologist, Susan Traubridge.
Combining expertise of medical, movement and music therapists, with professional dancers and musicians, programs were developed to
take the professional dancers and musicians into institutions for the handicapped and mentally ill. These Programs were developed with the expertise
of the therapists from the institutions, working together with Susan and the movement and music therapists of the Arts for Health Foundation and
realized by the professional dancers and musicians.
1979 – 1980 Dec. to Jan. “The Blue Shell”, Tokyo, Japan with drummer David Snodgrass’s trio

1983 – 1985 Det Jyske Musik Konservatorium, Århus. Teaching piano.
1983 – 1994 Pianist, composer, arranger. Started to meet the Danish musicians with the support of pianist Kenny Drew, who was the musical director of “The
Grock” in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen.
Continuing to arrange and compose for the Danish Radio. These years gave the gift of producing about 10 compositions and 30 arrangements for The
D.R. Big Band and about 40 arrangements and 6 compositions to The D. R. Entertainment Orchestra, 3 pieces for The D.R.’s Chamber Choir and
on occasion, conducted The D.R. Big Band.
1992 “Nord Lyst” for the re-opening, and The Danish National Museum.
Queen Margrethe took this piece and the musicians to the Norwegian Royal Family.

1986 – 1990 Marie Brolin Dance Theatre, 2 ballets, “Yerma” and “John Bauer”. Both 1 hour long.
1986 – 2008 Teaching:
1986 – 1994 Teaching at The Rhythmic Music Conservatory. Appointed docent (assistant professor) in 1987
Taught piano, theory, combos and directed the big band. Also, with assistance of the Frederiksberg Kommunes socialforvaltnings office, was able to
bring the students of the conservatory out to play for lots of people in hospitals, schools and old age centers.
1994 – 2002 Docent at Vestjysk Music Conservatory in Esbjerg. Formed the “Very Big Band” in 1995,
which is open for all students, classical and rhythmic. VBB based its programs on folk music and specialists in each type of folk music, joining the
band. The students and Butch, on occasion, composed and arranged music based on the folk music the specialist chose to present.
The programs of The Very Big Band:
· 1995 Danish folk music from Fanø with violinist Peter Urbrandt.
· 1996 “ASA”, music from Ghana. VBB was joined by students from Center for Rytmisk Musik og Bevægelse in Silkeborg. Desmond Appiah –
Boateng, from Kumasi, Ghana was featured.
· 1996 Music from Bosnia, Iran, and Turkey. There were students at the conservatory in Esbjerg from these 3 countries and they were featured.
Money was raised from the concert tour and 37.000 kr was sent to the conservatory in Sarajevo from the Very Big Band.
· 1997 Music from China. Master musician, Shao Ben from Beijing, was featured.
· 1998 Music from Letland and Estonia. “The Baltic Return” sponsored by the Danish Culture Institute provided this event. Music from these
countries was the basis for the program and VBB traveled to Riga and Tallinn and was joined by students from the conservatories there.
The Very Big Band became huge!
· 1999 VBB composed and performed music for the opening ceremony of the European Youth Olympics in Esbjerg.40 European countries were
represented.
· 2000 “Miles and Monk” featuring singer Janet Lawson from New York.
· 2001 “Ribe Amt”. VBB composed and recorded the soundtrack to a film on Ribe Amt. This music was expanded into a concert program and
taken on tour.
· 2002 “Peace on Earth” with the assistance of composer Hans Abrahamsen, the Danish Red Cross, and Amnesty International, a program of
original music was created by the students and presented in concerts. The highlight of this project was playing at a Red Cross refugee center
on Langeland, in Denmark.
Several programs were realized with the students in Esbjerg to go out into the community and make music. Performances have been presented at many
community centers ( forsamlingshuse ) in Ribe Amt. Also projects with handicapped adults and children, in Esbjerg, have been realized.

2000 – 2008 Started courses in “Music and Meditation” at Munach at Djursland together with Jørgen Høher. “The Music Center” established in 2002
with 10 programmed courses a year, continues the theme, “Music seeks the musician”

Besides the full time docentur, and after that period too, I’ve held clinics and workshops for all the Danish Conservatories and many music schools.

1996 The first “Thad Jones Competition” of the Danish Radio. Jury member, along with Bob Brookmeyer and Dick Oatts.
2000 August. The Budapest Jazz Orchestra. Conducted a 10 day workshop, ending in a tour of Hungary.
2001 December: Conducting the “Budapest Jazz Orchestra” and participated as a member of the jury and offering master classes to big band
conductors in the first “All Hungarian Big Band Festival”.
2002 Feb. 4, T.C. Electronics, an international company, has a system of “Core Values”. A “jazz band” is a metaphor used as a modal for the flow
of communication within T.C. Electronics. With the assistance of T.C.’s Carsten Lebeck and Jakob Blake, a presentation for 120
employees of T.C. Electronics was held at Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium. Butch conducted the presentation with the assistance of
“Chappe” Jenson and the big band from the conservatory, in a “real life experience” of communication within a jazz band and its
parallels within a company structure.
2003 “Arts in Business” in London made a symposium in Edinburgh, Scotland. I made a presentation about my work with T.C. Electronics.
2004 Klüvers Big Band. Travels to Toronto, Canada with my music, texts translated to English, and performed with hundreds of Canadian children
singing.

TO LISTEN - to hear the music that springs forth in the stillness with silence, this applies to the study and rehearsal of composed works also
RHYTHM - to experience rhythm in multiple layers of pulsating energy, this builds and gives form to inspiration and musical expression
STRUCTURE - to find the structure of the music’s nature and the technique necessary to realize the music
SOUND - to find and express one’s own sound, the most natural, free flowing sound, this applies to the individual musician and ensembles as well.
